New Page Studio & Plein Air Gear

Inspired by an artist umbrella acquired over a decade ago and the need for new arts gear I have a new page. The umbrellas last use was at Ghost Ranch New Mexico where an irreplaceable part was lost in Box Canyon, my guess is the ghost of Georgia O'Keefe took off with it as a token for drawing her mountain. Small price if you ask me.

The Center for Western Studies has been collecting and preserving books, archival collections, artifacts and art of the Northern Plains since 1970। The “40th Anniversary Exhibition” displays some of the more than 750 pieces in the Center’s art collection. The items on display cover a wide range of artists, media, styles, and genres and include works by Gutzon Borglum, Norman Rockwell, John Banvard, Harvey Dunn, Henry Farny, Oscar Howe, Belva Curtis, Herb Fischer, Arthur Amiotte, Nancyjane Huehl, Roger Preuss, Joel Strasser, Pamela Harr and many more. The “40th Anniversary Exhibition: Art from the CWS Collection.” The exhibit is located in the Madsen/Nelson/Elmen Galleries of the Center for Western Studies’ Fantle Building and runs through Saturday, Feb. 26.
The Center for Western Studies is located at 2121 S। Summit Ave। on the campus of Augustana College। Hours are 8:00 a।m। - 5:00 p.m. weekdays and 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Call 605.274.4007 for more information. The painting above is "Moonlight," by John Gutzon Borglum.

An Afternoon With Harvey Dunn

On September 25, 2010, eight noted South Dakota artists with the original oil paintings of Harvey Dunn for inspiration will create an individual work of art. The event is apart of the current exhibition of the works Harvey Dunn at the Dahl In Rapid City, SD and will open to the public from 1:00 to 6:00, artist talk will be given from 5:00 to 6:00 that Saturday. The Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City, SD has on display a selection of twenty-nine works by artist Harvey Dunn on loan from the South Dakota Art Museum.

In his teaching on art he spoke often about spirit and emotions more than technique.

New note book, new printer, Pencils the sketch pad -paper of course - I can't move fast enough to post this sketch! A night of "arm chair -storm chasing" doing this sketch as the event unfolded in Western Kansas, on the Weather Channel -coming to me live in South Dakota. I can almost smell the air way down in Kansas, Look out Toto, Look out Dorothy. This has got me looking forward to the start of new collaborative project. Can't say more than that for now. Keep on checking in for posts as the next two years unfolds.

The painting "a house for the people, by the people....." was inspired not only by the 1970's photo used to create it but also from my personal experience of growing up and living in Pierre SD. Experiences that range from Girl Scout Christmas concerts as a Brownie, to decorating a tree for Christmas in the grand hall just outside Governor M. Rounds Office two years ago. The Capitol is painted into the lives I and so many others have lived since it's completion a centery ago. The South Dakota Capitol, it's art and history is the home we work and dream in. The stately front view entrance reflects the endurance of our state, the people who came before us, the times we live in, the steps we are taking towards inspired plans and hopes, to continue the quality of life South Dakota is known for." -N.Huehl-

Following a tough winter of never ending snow storms, my finding out what a "pro" I can be in the art of snow removal with a piece of equipment that obscured the world with it's own flurry of undesired snow, spring is here. A chance to create flower beds, instead of snow banks, once again. So many of you have asked about my having something on the web, and with the immediate insistence of a great new friend, her notebook and knowledge, (a shared bottle of wine) we are all getting what we have wanted.....a place to keep in touch.

New Project:

I just completed for Patricia Miller and the SD Cultural Heritage Center, the painting , " a house for the people, by the people....." 20" x 10" oil. It will be auctioned off in June at the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the SD Capitol Building.
